Former England international defender Ryan Bertrand has announced his retirement from all forms of football with immediate effect this afternoon.

The 34-year-old left-back left Leicester City in the summer of 2023 following their relegation from the Premier League and was without a club for the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign before now officially hanging up his boots.

Bertrand came through the academy at Chelsea but spent a lot of his career at Stamford Bridge out on loan between 2006 and 2015. He had two stints at AFC Bournemouth before moves to Oldham Athletic, two spells at Norwich City, Reading, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and then Southampton – where he moved to on a permanent basis in 2015.

He did play 57 times for Chelsea, though, and famously started the 2012 UEFA Champions League final in which the Blues defeated Bayern Munich on penalties at the Allianz Arena.

After joining Southampton for a fee believed to be in the region of £10 million, he eventually became captain of the Saints and played 240 matches for the south coast club across all competitions in the six years he was there before becoming a fringe player at Leicester for the final two years of his career.

Internationally, Bertrand played for England’s youth teams at U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 level as well as earning caps 19 caps for the first-team, forming a part of the Three Lions 23-man squad that reached the Round of 16 at UEFA EURO 2016. He also represented Team GB at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Wow, such a shame to see such a talented player retire. Bertrand was a joy to watch on the pitch and always gave his all for whichever team he played for. Wishing him all the best in his next venture!
