Shaqiri stunner evens out McTominay goal...

Scotland keep hopes alive with draw

        2024/06/19 22:21

Scotland kept their EURO 2024 hopes alive with a draw against Switzerland in Köln after Xherdan Shaqiri's strike evened out Scott McTominay's early goal.

Action: After a terrible opening day against Germany, Scotland were vastly improved against the Swiss.

Steve Clarke's side took the lead after a quick counterattack that began with a Scott McTominay defensive header. Scotland soon moved up the field with Callum McGregor feeding the ball through for McTominay to shoot.

The Manchester United man's effort took a deflection off Fabian Schär but still nestled in the net past Yann Sommar.

That lead lasted just 16 minutes when Xherdan Shaqiri evened the score. Scotland's backline was caught out passing at the back with Shaqiri pouncing on a loose ball and firing an effort past Angus Gunn from outside the box.

Murat Yakin's team thought they had taken the lead in the 33rd minute after Scotland failed to deal with a corner with Dan N'Doye eventually rounding Gunn to finish. Fortunately for the Scottish side, the goal was ruled out for offside.

        Half time: Scotland 1-1 Switzerland

Both sides went into the break even with Scotland denied by the woodwork with just over an hour gone.

Andy Robertson's free-kick from the right was aimed towards the box with Grant Hanley rising highest only to see his header bounce off the post with Scotland unable to follow up on the rebound.

It was a similar scenario for Switzerland, who had Scotland under the cosh by the point, having a golden chance in the 90th minute of the game. Rennes player Fabian Rieder whipped in a free-kick from deep that fellow substitute Zeki Amdouni met with his head.

The Burnley star's effort went just wide of the post in what was a huge chance late on.

Man of the Match: It's difficult to pick one player in particular but Scott McTominay's goal, arguably an own goal, summed up how important he is for the national team. The midfielder was instrumental in clearing the danger before quickly getting up to make the finishing touch.

Big Picture: With Germany already assured of qualification after defeating Hungary earlier today Scotland kept their hopes alive with a point against Switzerland. Judging by today's performance, Steve Clarke's team have a great chance of getting a result against the Hungarians.

        xG: Scotland (0.79) 1-1 (0.93) Switzerland

Great performance from Scotland today! McTominay was a beast in midfield and deserved his goal. Shame about the equalizer but let's keep our heads up and go for the win in the next game!

As a Scottish football fan, I have to say that I'm extremely grateful for the draw against Switzerland. After our rough start against Germany, it's a relief to see our team come back and put up a good fight. McTominay's early goal was a great start and Shaqiri's equalizer was a tough one to swallow, but overall, it's a positive result for us. Our team showed determination and improvement, and that's something to be grateful for.

Great game from Scotland! McTominay showing his worth with that early goal and the team looking much more organized. Shaqiri's strike was a bit lucky but we'll take the point. Let's keep fighting for that EURO 2024 spot!

Great fight from our lads, gutted we couldn't hold on for the win but a point against a tough Swiss side is a good result. McTominay with a solid performance and Shaqiri showing his quality with that goal. Come on Scotland!
