Coventry City ended Maidstone United's FA Cup run to book their place in the quarter-finals with Ellis Simms scoring a hat-trick.

Anyone dreaming of a cupset in this fixture will have seen their hopes dashed early on, the Sky Blues were ahead inside the ninth minute when Kasey Palmer slipped a ball through for Ellis Simms to get his first of the game.

Simms doubled his tally and his side's lead with a similar goal. Once again it was Palmer with the clever pass that Simms hit early to beat Lucas Covolan.

The quality between the two teams was on full display and the game was effectively wrapped up with just over a half hour gone when Simms secured his hat-trick.

It was the same combination again for Coventry's third – although Palmer won't get an official assist for his involvement. The midfielder fired a powerful effort from distance that Covolan could only parry away. Simms was in the right place at the right time to make it 3-0.

The home side were able to relax for the second half with Maidstone United looking slightly improved but unable to create any chances of note.

With the game almost up, sixth-tier Maidstone would likely have taken the 3-0 defeat but there was still time for Fábio Tavares to add some gloss to the scoreline.

Matt Godden's pass set Tavares away to make it four for the Sky Blues in the 88th minute before Godden was involved for a second time when his shot was stopped by Covolan but Tavares then had the simplest of jobs to make it 5-0 on the night.

It was a performance that showed just how big the gap is between the Championship and the National League South.

As a Coventry City fan, I am absolutely buzzing with this result! Ellis Simms was on fire with his hat-trick, and Kasey Palmer's passes were spot on. We completely dominated Maidstone United and showed our quality on the pitch. Can't wait for the quarter-finals!

As a Coventry City fan, I couldn't be happier with our performance today! Ellis Simms was on fire with his hat-trick, and the team as a whole played with such skill and determination. Maidstone United put up a good fight, but we were simply too strong for them. On to the quarter-finals we go!
