Spain through to EURO 2024 final

2024/07/09 22:14

16-year-old Lamine Yamal inspired Spain to come from behind and defeat France by two goals to one at the Allianz Arena in Munich in the first semi-final of UEFA EURO 2024 and will head to the Olympiastadion in Berlin on Sunday.

ESP XI: Unai Simon; Jesus Navas, Nacho, Laporte, Cucurella; Dani Olmo, Rodri, Fabian Ruiz; Lamine Yamal, Alvaro Morata*, Nico Williams

ESP SUBS: David Raya, Alex Remiro, Dani Vivian, Alex Grimaldo, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, Alex Baena, Fermin Lopez, Mikel Oyarzabal, Ferran Torres, Ayoze Perez, Joselu

FRA XI: Maignan; Kounde, Upamecano, Saliba, Hernandez; Kante, Tchouameni, Rabiot; Dembele, Kolo Muani, Mbappe*

FRA SUBS: Areola, Samba, Konate, Pavard, Clauss, Mendy, Fofana, Zaire-Emery, Camavinga, Coman, Griezmann, Barcola, Thuram, Giroud

Action: In what was a fast-paced game from the off, Spain dominated the very early exchanges and had a very presentable opportunity to take the lead in the opening five minutes.

The excellent Lamine Yamal clipped a ball to the back post where Fabian Ruiz met it but the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder lacked control as the ball ballooned high over Mike Maignan’s cross-bar.

France then, had an almost identical move themselves from the other side to take a ninth minute lead. Jesus Navas, now 38, was caught playing Kylian Mbappe onside and the now mask-less France captain clipped up to the back post for Randal Kolo Muani to glance home.

With Spain now beginning to look a bit ragged with their bits and pieces back four, of which Jesus Navas got himself booked after 14 minutes, Mbappe had an opening to make it two but his fierce drive cannoned off the keeper before Kolo Muani struggled to sort his feet out in time on the rebound.

France, looking likelier to score and therefore double their lead, then suffered a surprise sucker-punch when the remarkable talent of Lamine Yamal arrived back on the scene. The 16-year-old Barcelona attacker bent his effort from around 25 yards in off the woodwork to level the scores and become the youngest player to ever score at a UEFA European Championships.

Only a few moments later, La Roja found themselves ahead. Pressuring once more, a couple of precise and delicate, perfect touches from Dani Olmo allowed the RB Leipzig man to get a shot off with Jules Kounde helping the ball into his own net.

Initially given as a Kounde own goal, Dani Olmo was soon credited with the strike and his third of the tournament – all three coming in successive knockout matches.

France, behind for the first time in the tournament, finally had to react but couldn’t really force anything remotely incisive as half-time approached and calls for the precision and creativity of Antoine Griezmann grew louder.

As France pushed for an equaliser, they continued to lack any real thrust or idea of what to do in the final third and their best chance came when Aurelien Tchouameni headed straight at Unai Simon from an Ousmane Dembele corner.

For a large chunk of the second-half, though, and this is to Spain’s credit, very little happened in the match as France surrendered space and Spain killed the game with controlled possession.

There were a couple of glorious opportunities for the French to equalise late on when Theo Hernandez blazed high over the bar when the ball fell to him just inside the box before Kylian Mbappe the ran with real purpose before getting to the edge of the box and launching it high over the cross-bar.

There was to be no late drama as a well-polished, well controlled Spanish side eventually actually eased themselves into the final of UEFA EURO 2024, where they will play either the Netherlands or England.

Man of the Match: Lamine Yamal. The Barcelona winger was simply sublime for Spain and scored a magnificent strike to level things and essentially send the Spaniards on their way.

Big picture: Luis de la Fuente, who led Spain to UEFA Nations League glory last summer, will now have the chance to win another trophy as they head into a major tournament final for the first time since 2012 having defeated Italy, Croatia, Germany and France en route to Berlin. France, on the other hand, have now won just one of the six major tournaments of which Didier Deschamps has been in charge and, upon reflection, that may not be looked on too favourably.

Expected goals: Spain (0.79) 2-1 (1.26) France

‘9 | GOAL: Kolo Muani (0-1)
21 | GOAL: Lamine Yamal (1-1)
’26 | GOAL: Dani Olmo (2-1)

However, it wasn't until the introduction of Lamine Yamal that they were able to break through the French defense and turn the game in their favor. As a fan of the Spanish team, I couldn't be more proud of Yamal's performance and the impact he had on the team's victory. He truly is a rising star and I can't wait to see what he will bring to the final in Berlin on Sunday. Vamos España!

However, it was France who struck first through Kolo Muani, who finished off a well-worked team move.

As a fan of team Spain, I am absolutely gutted by this result. It was a tough match and we definitely had our chances, but in the end, France was just too strong. Our 16-year-old star Lamine Yamal gave it his all, but unfortunately it wasn't enough. Despite the loss, I am still proud of our team and can't
