Surprise calls in Southgate's England training squad

Gareth Southgate named his provisional England training squad ahead of EURO 2024 with some big calls from the manager.

Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips, Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling, Dominic Solanke, and Marcus Rashford are among the big-name absentees.

Ajax's Henderson's name is a surprise omission given the midfielder is one of the senior figures in the squad while Phillips, a regular under Southgate, has not managed to recapture his previous form at club level.

Chilwell's exclusion comes despite questions over the fitness of Luke Shaw, who has not played since February.

Dominic Solanke enjoyed a fine goalscoring season for Bournemouth this campaign scoring 19 goals in 38 games but is not included.

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling has still yet to play an England game since the 2022 World Cup and Marcus Rashford's poor form this campaign has cost him a place in the squad.

There is a youthful look to some of the names introduced into the squad though. Adam Wharton and Jarell Quansah are receiving their first call-ups while uncapped Curtis Jones and Jarrod Branthwaite are also included.

Jack Grealish keeps his place in the team despite having a campaign interrupted by injuries while Ivan Toney's recent goal drought has not stopped him from being included.

Following the England training camp, Southgate will reduce his squad to his final 26 for the European Championships with friendly games against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland to come before the Three Lions begin their tournament against Serbia on June 16th in Gelsenkirchen.

      England provisional squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale, James Trafford.

Defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite, Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, Marc Guéhi, Ezri Konsa, Harry Maguire, Jarell Quansah, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker.

Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Gallagher, Curtis Jones, Kobbie Mainoo, Declan Rice, Adam Wharton.

Forwards: Jude Bellingham, Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, James Maddison, Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins.

As a die-hard England fan, I'm disappointed to see some big names missing from the provisional squad. Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips, and Raheem Sterling have all been key players for the Three Lions in recent years and their absence raises some questions. And what about Ben Chilwell With Luke Shaw's fitness concerns, his exclusion seems like a risky move. On the other hand, I'm glad to see some new faces like Dominic Solanke getting a chance, but it's

As a fan of one of the teams, I'm disappointed to see some big names missing from the provisional squad. Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips, and Raheem Sterling have been key players in the past, while Ben Chilwell and Marcus Rashford have shown their talent in previous tournaments. And what about Dominic Solanke's impressive season at Bournemouth I hope Southgate has a plan in place and these omissions are for the best.
