Willy Sagnol names his 26-man squad

The Giorgi's and Georges of Georgia

Former France defender and now Georgia manager Willy Sagnol has become the sixth coach to name his final 26-man squad for this summer’s UEFA European Championships in Germany.

It is Georgia’s first ever major tournament after winning Path C of the playoffs in March, defeating Luxembourg and then UEFA EURO 2004 winners Greece in Tbilisi.

Whilst the Georgians will be among the weakest and most inexperienced teams in the tournament, there are some genuinely really impressive players within their squad.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is, of course, the jewel with the Napoli winner crucial to winning the 2022/23 Serie A title for the Neapolitans, albeit coming off the back of an underwhelming season this time around.

In attack, he is joined by in-form Georges Mikautadze. His move to Ajax last summer didn’t work out but since re-joining Metz, he has been one of the most effective strikers in Europe’s major leagues. He finished the season with 13 goals in 20 Ligue 1 appearances and 11 in 12 games.

Some other notable names peppered throughout the squad would be goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili of Valencia, who is heavily linked with Newcastle United, Shakhtar Donetsk’s Giorgi Gocholeishvili, Watford winger Giorgi Chakvetadze and attacker Budu Zivzivadze.

As a football fan, I am absolutely thrilled to see Georgia participating in their first major tournament. It is a huge achievement for the country and I am excited to see how they will perform against some of the top teams in Europe. Despite being considered a weak team, their squad boasts some impressive players like Kvaratskhelia and Mikautadze who have proven themselves at top clubs. I have high hopes for them and I will be rooting for Georgia all the way!
