The Netherlands' EURO 2024 campaign ended with elimination to England, in what was the end of a complicated season for Virgil Van Dijk. The 33-year-old Liverpool defender will now rest but without certainty about his future, both with the national team and the club.
Van Dijk has been at Liverpool since 2018 and has since became an idol at the club where he lifted the Premier League and the Champions League.
But in 2023/24, he saw his former coach, Jürgen Klopp, say goodbye. The defender is currently expected to be on the pitch to lead the Reds next season but that is not yet guaranteed.
"I have no idea [about the future]. I will carefully think during the holidays about what I want at the club level and as a national team player," he explained in a statement to Reuters.
"Then I will start over, but first I have to recover from this. After a season like this, where all kinds of things happened, things become emotional in the end, when we know it's over," he concluded.
