Aston Villa come out on top in an entertaining UEFA Europa Conference League Group E clash as they secure top spot and automatically qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament.

VILLA XI: Olsen; Cash, Konsa, Lenglet, Alex Moreno; Kamara; Luiz, Tielemans; McGinn*; Diaby, Duran

VILLA SUBS: Marschall, Martinez, Carlos, Torres, Chambers, Digne, Ramsey, Dendoncker, Zaniolo, Bailey

LEGIA XI: Tobiasz; Pankov, Jedrzejczyk, Kapuadi; Wszolek, Slisz, Elitim, Gil Dias; Josue, Marc Gual; Maci

LEGIA SUBS: Hladun, Burch, Ribeiro, Kun, Augustyniak, Rejczyk, Celhaka, Strzalek, Kapustka, Pekhart, Kramer, Rosolek

Action: An entertaining first-half at Villa Park saw Legia Warsaw on the front foot with a corner and an attack within the first minute but that pressure was undone soon after.

Moussa Diaby, who hasn’t the most consistently electric start to his life in the Premier League, opened the scoring with an excellent solo effort.

Released down the right, the France international drove at the Legia backline before cutting inside onto his left foot and unleashing a rasping drive into the far bottom corner to give The Villains an early lead.

However, despite continued pressure and the occasional effort on goal, Villa didn’t find an early second and were actually pegged back just 15 minutes later.

Robin Olsen, playing out from the back, found Boubacar Kamara in midfield. The Frenchman played a lazy pass out to Matty Cash, which was easily intercepted and Albanian international Ernest Muci bent a sublime finish into the top corner, past Olsen.

Legia, as they did in Poland in the reverse fixture, went at the Premier League side from the start in the second-half and Muci very nearly had a second when his looping header dropped onto the top of the net.

Villa, though, inched their way ahead mid-way through the half when a deep free-kick from Douglas Luiz was volleyed home by the on-rushing Alex Moreno to jubilant celebrations in the Holte End.

Villa and Legia continued to trade blows but the closest opportunity for a fourth in the match came very late on when Robin Olsen hammered over the top to Leon Bailey. The Jamaican lobbed Legia goalkeeper, Kacper Tobiasz, but a late glove tapped it onto the bar.

The big picture: Aston Villa have now managed four successive victories since losing in the Polish capital on match day one. They are assured of top spot, too, so could heavily rotate in their final match in Bosnia-Herzegovina against Zrinjski Mostar. Legia face a big game at home to AZ Alkmaar in a couple of weeks where a draw would be enough to see them qualify.

Man of the match: Douglas Luiz. The Brazilian has continued his improvement this season and the technique he has, matched with intelligence in his play, is making him much sought after.

His goal was followed by a sumptuous long-range effort from Anwar El Ghazi.

Villa held on for the win, finishing top of Group E and securing their place in the Round of 32 in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

He managed to take on three Legia defenders before slotting home a low shot from the edge of the box.

Daniel Cash then made it 2-0 before half-time, and the home side rarely looked back from there.

My opinion: Outstanding performance from Aston Villa! Stunning victory to take us top of the group.
