Sarina Wiegman's team can avoid play-offs...

Vital play-off games ahead for the Lionesses

        2024/07/10 18:19

Sarina Wiegman's England team have two vital qualifying games ahead of the 2025 European Championships.

The reigning European champions were drawn in a tough qualifying group that included France, Sweden, and the Republic of Ireland. But, with just two games left to play, England find themselves third in Group 3.

While finishing third in the group of four (with the Republic of Ireland already guaranteed to finish bottom) isn't the end of the world for England – they would be huge favourites for a play-off game against League C opposition – they will want to get the group wrapped up as soon as possible.

The 2025 qualification campaign began with an underwhelming 1-1 draw against Sweden at Wembley where Alessia Russo's opener was cancelled by Fridolina Rolfö's equaliser.

Lauren James and Alex Greenwood were both on target in a 2-0 win against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin but England suffered defeat at home in the next game against France.

Beth Mead had given the Lionesses the lead before the French struck back through Élisa De Almeida and Marie-Antoinette Katoto to make it 2-1 to the visitors.

England did get revenge thanks to an important 2-1 win of their own in Saint-Étienne with goals coming through Georgia Stanway and Russo.

All of that means England are third in the group with seven points from four games. The Lionesses are level on points with Sweden but have a +2 goal difference compared to the Swedes' +3.

France could do England a big favour by defeating Sweden with England heavy favourites to defeat the Irish at Carrow Road this Friday.

But really, regardless of what happens the key game is going to be the most difficult: facing Sweden in Gothenburg on Tuesday.

Historically, Sweden have had the better of England including big victories at the start of the 2000s. But in recent years it has been far closer.

In the last six games between the two nations, England have won twice, Sweden have won twice, and there have been two draws – including that stalemate back in April.

Most concerning for Wiegman will be the absence of one of England's most important players, Lauren James. The Chelsea forward has been out since May with a foot injury.

And while it's hard to see a way that England don't qualify for EURO 2025... doing it the hard way would not breed confidence in the Lionesses defending their crown.

As a football fan, I have high expectations for the upcoming games against France and Sweden. It's crucial for England to secure a top spot in Group 3 and avoid any potential play-off games. Our team has the talent and determination to do it, but we can't afford any slip-ups. Let's go Lionesses!

As a football fan, it's been a rollercoaster of emotions watching England in the 2025 European Championships qualifiers. We started off strong with a win against Ireland but the draw against Sweden was disappointing. Hopefully, we can turn things around and secure our spot in the competition
