Pressure builds on Rob Page...

Wales humbled in Slovakia

2024/06/09 21:50

Wales' poor international break continued after a heavy 4-0 defeat away to Slovakia.

Rob Page's team already received a large amount of criticism after being held to a goalless draw by minnows Gibraltar.

The Wales manager did make seven changes from that game and despite a bright start, his side went to a 4-0 defeat.

The warning signs were there when Dávid Hancko thought he had opened the scoring in the 26th minute after a short-corner routine only to find he was offside.

But just before the break Slovakia (who will be a part of a group involving Belgium, Romania, and Ukraine at EURO 2024) took the lead. Danny Ward's rustiness could be to blame when he failed to react as Juraj Kucka let fly just on the edge of the area and found the bottom corner.

Slovakia doubled their lead just over 10 minutes into the second period. Hancko's low ball from the left was converted by Róbert Boženík who found space in the box to sidefoot the ball in from close range.

Just four minutes later it was 3-0. This time it was a cross from the right with Lukáš Haraslín attempting what would have been a spectacular overhead kick had it gone straight in but instead, the ball was diverted into the net by the unfortunate Ethan Ampadu.

The home team completed the route, and a confidence-boosting win, early into stoppage time when Hamburger SV midfielder Laszlo Bénes picked up a loose pass and then fired in a curling effort from the edge of the area.

It was another terrible result for the Welsh with pressure now on Page to turn things around.

As a fan of one of the teams, I'm relieved to see that there were some improvements made in the starting lineup, but it's still disappointing to suffer such a heavy defeat. Hopefully, the team can regroup and learn from this match.

Vladimir Weiss cut inside from the left and fizzed a shot past Ward at his near post.

As a fan of the Wales team, I am extremely disappointed with this result. After the disappointing draw against Gibraltar, I was hoping for a strong reaction from the team, but it seems like they have not learned from their mistakes. The manager's decision to make seven changes may have been a contributing factor, but ultimately, the players were not able to perform and were punished by a strong Slovakia side.

Gareth Bale's poor clearing header fell to Robert Mak who made no mistake with a clinical finish.

As a football fan, I am devastated by Wales' recent performance. The 4-0 defeat to Slovakia is unacceptable and only adds to the criticism they received after their draw with Gibraltar. I expected better from Rob Page's team, especially after the changes he made. However, the warning signs were already there and it's disappointing to see Danny Ward's mistake leading to Slovakia's first goal. Gareth
