Belgium 0-1 Slovakia

Wasteful Belgium humbled by Slovakia in stunning Euros upset

2024/06/17 19:09

Ivan Schranz’s early goal set the stage for a determined Slovakia to achieve the biggest upset of UEFA Euro 2024 so far, securing a 1-0 victory over Belgium in Frankfurt.

Action: The Red Devils dominated from the start, with Romelu Lukaku heavily involved in the early exchanges. His attempt for an early opener was thwarted by a brilliant save from Martin Dubravka.

An early Belgium goal seemed inevitable, but it was Slovakia who struck first.

Seven minutes in, Ivan Schranz scored with a well-executed volley after Jeremy Doku lost possession and Juraj Kucka's shot was parried by goalkeeper Koen Casteels directly to Schranz, who found the far bottom corner from a tight angle.

Belgium continued to create chances throughout the game. Leandro Trossard missed a clear opportunity after Dubravka inexplicably passed the ball to a Belgian player just 20 yards out.

Shortly after, Slovakia almost doubled their lead when Lukas Haraslin's volley was saved by Casteels.

Early in the second half, Belgium thought they had levelled when Amadou Onana's header set up Lukaku for a close-range finish, but he was marginally offside.

Throughout the second half, Dubravka made several crucial saves to deny Trossard and Lukaku, and Dávid Hancko’s goal-line clearance stopped Johan Bakayoko from equalising.

As the match was coming towards the end, Domenico Tedesco's men became more nervous and their attacks became less frequent.

However, with five minutes remaining, it appeared they had finally scored when Lukaku found the net from 15 yards out. Yet, VAR ruled it out for a slight handball by Lois Openda in the build-up.

In the seven minutes of added time, the Red Devils pushed hard for an equaliser, but Dubravka made a comfortable save on Kevin De Bruyne's low shot to secure the win for Slovakia.

Big Picture: With this result, Slovakia join Romania at the top of Group E, while Belgium will have to avoid defeat next Saturday in order to progress in the tournament.

Next up, the Red Devils will take on Romania in Cologne on Saturday evening, while Slovakia will face Ukraine, who cannot afford a second defeat on Friday afternoon.

Player of the match: Milan Skriniar. The skipper led his team to a historic victory with an outstanding performance, consistently thwarting Belgium's numerous attempts on goal.

Expected Goals: Belgium (2.10) 0-1 (0.71) Slovakia

Stat of the Day: Ivan Schranz’s goal in the seventh minute was Slovakia's fastest goal at a major tournament.

As a fan of Belgium, I am extremely disappointed with this loss. We had multiple chances to score and dominate the game, but Slovakia's early goal changed the whole dynamic. Our players seemed frustrated and couldn't find a way to equalize. Congrats to Slovakia, but this is a tough loss for us.

Kevin De Bruyne also hit the post with a powerful effort from outside the box.

But Slovakia held on, with Dubravka making several impressive saves to secure the shocking victory.
