Two dominant sides go head-to-head this weekend

WCL final preview: Can Lyon stop Barcelona?

2024/05/23 10:11

Two giants of the women's game go head to head in Bilbao this weekend as holders Barcelona take on the competition's most successful team Lyon in the Champions League final.

Since 2016, either one of these two has been in a Champions League final game with Lyon having won eight trophies in total while Barcelona have won their two in the last three years.

According to the bookies, Barcelona are the strong favourites which is not surprising considering that they're the reigning European champions and feature the likes of Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí in their squad.

However, if there's one other team in Europe who can get the best of them it's Lyon who have defeated the Catalan side in all four meetings between the two so far.

So, let's have a closer look at the two sides...

Winners: 2021, 2023
Runners-up: 2019, 2022

@FC Barcelona
Surprisingly, Barcelona found themselves 2-0 down in the 2023 Champions League final against Wolfsburg. However two goals in just as many minutes from Patricia Guijarro levelled things in Eindhoven before Fridolina Rolfö scored the winner a 3-2 victory.

That win sealed a Liga F and European double but this season they're looking to replicate the treble that included the Copa de la Reina in 2021.

As expected, Barcelona easily secured the domestic league this season with an amazing undefeated record of 27 wins and a single draw from 28 games with 129 goals scored and just 9 conceded. Barça still have two fixtures left to play in Liga F this season, against Real Betis and Valencia, but we can't see that unbeaten record changing.

Meanwhile, the Copa de la Reina was wrapped up last weekend with an 8-0 win over Real Sociedad – cup final wins don't get more definitive than that.

Barcelona also go into this final with the news that star player Alexia Putellas has signed a new deal to keep her at the club until 2026. While Putellas is yet to recapture the world-beating form she showed before her serious injury, she is still on her day someone who can do something very special.

Winners: 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022
Runners-up: 2010, 2013

If rumours are to be believed this could be Sonia Bompastor's last season in charge of Lyon with the manager linked to the Chelsea job. Going out with a Champions League win over Barcelona wouldn't be a bad way to do it.

As usual, Les Lyonnaises romped home to the league title finishing 11 points ahead of Paris Saint-Germain while losing just once during the campaign – a 2-1 defeat away to Bordeaux on the final day of the season.

While going up against Barcelona is a daunting prospect, Lyon do it knowing that they have the better of their opponents until now.

Looking back at the head-to-head record, Lyon first defeated Barcelona in both games over two legs during the 2017/18 quarter-finals (3-1 on aggregate after a 2-1 win at home and a 1-0 win on the road) with the French side going on to lift the trophy again that season.

The two most recent games in which Lyon have defeated Barcelona have been in Champions League finals. The first of those two was a 4-1 win in Budapest with Ada Hegerberg the star as the Norwegian scored a hat-trick.

Then going back just two seasons in the most recent meeting between the teams, Amandine Henry gave Lyon the lead early on in what was a 3-1 win Hegerberg (again) scoring and Catarina Macário, now of Chelsea, making it 3-0 in the 33rd minute.

Putellas did pull one back before half-time but the Lyon defence, commanded by the indomitable Wendie Renard, held firm to keep Barça out.

If Lyon want to make it five wins in a row they'll need their defence to hold firm again against the likes of Putellas, Bonmatí, and Mariona Caldentey who will be more determined than ever to get a win against the record holders at the fifth time of asking.

After a late comeback, they eventually won on penalties.

As a fan of Lyon, I have to admit that Barcelona has been on top of their game in recent years. Their squad is stacked with talented players like Putellas and Bonmatí, making them the strong favorites according to the bookies. But we all know Lyon's history and their ability to come out on top in big games. It won't be an easy task, but I have faith in our team to bring home another trophy

As a football fan of Barcelona, I am nervous yet excited to see our team take on Lyon in the Champions League final. The odds may be against us, but with players like Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí in our squad, we have a strong chance of defending our title. Lyon may have a history of defeating us, but we are determined to break that streak and prove ourselves as the top team in Europe. Let's go Barca!

As a fan of FC Barcelona, I have to say I am feeling very content with our chances in this weekend's Champions League final against Lyon. Our team has been on a roll, winning two out of the last three titles. Plus, we have some top players like Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí who are sure to make a big impact. But of course, we can't underestimate Lyon, they have a strong track record and defeated us in all four

As a fan of Barcelona, I am feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement for this weekend's game against Lyon. It's no surprise that our team is seen as the strong favourites with our recent success and star players like Putellas and Bonmatí. But let's not forget Lyon, the most successful team in the competition with eight titles under their belt. They have a history of defeating us and I know they will put up a tough fight. But I have faith in our
