Peter Schmeichel - The Grand Danois

Some found his style rather unorthodox, hiperbolic, too crazy for a representative of the cold Nordic school. His saves enchanted the viewers and his temper caused fear to his team-mates. The fear increased in his opponents when they stared at the Gladsaxe giant face to face.

Schmeichel always had his heart in mouth. Big in every sense, the Danish defended the impossible and won as few. Even if he had to run across the field in a corner and retrieve the ball so that his team conquered the Champions League...

A keeper who enjoyed staying in history

The great Dane marked an era in his goal. Considered the best goalkeeper in the world in 1992 and 1993, he was crucial in Denmark’s win in Euro 1992. 

He entered Brondby’s history by helping the Copenhagen-based club to reach the quarter-finals to the European Champions Clubs’ Cup, shone in England at the service of Manchester United.

Success in Manchester and the move to Lisbon

At Old Trafford, Peter Schmeichel helped the Red Devils conquer the first title in 26 years and also win a Champions League, before completing a switch to Portugal, where he leaded Sporting Lisbon to break an 18 year-deadlock and win the league.

Eight years at the highest level and 15 trophies lifted made Schmeichel embrace a new adventure, “where I won’t have to play every three days”, he pointed.

The announcement of his move to Sporting Lisbon, at 36 years of age, was a huge surprise and, just as he had done with Manchester United, he helped his new team interrupt an 18 year-hiatus without winning the title.

After two years, he would still return to England to play for Aston Villa and Manchester City, but with nowhere near the success he had for Brondy, the Red Devils or Sporting.
