Who could replace Frank Lampard at Chelsea?

After bagging the lowest win percentage of any Roman Abramovich-era manager and registering just two Premier League wins his last eight, Chelsea's greatest ever player, Frank Lampard, has been sacked today with the club looking to save a season that was quickly unraveling.

The betting odds have thrown up some interesting names to take over one of the most talented squads in Europe, here at Playmaker, we deemed it time to run through the contenders for the hottest seat in football.

1/1 Thomas Tuchel

Unemployed after being removed from his role at PSG just weeks ago, last year’s losing Champions League finalist, Tuchel, is the bookies’ favourite to come straight in at Stamford Bridge.

Known to create friction with those above him, Tuchel is one of the finest tactical minds to come out of Germany in recent years, and gives off huge Chelsea vibes as a young, erudite and charismatic coach that could easily steer the squad towards trophies as early as this season.

Much-maligned but still appreciated by Chelsea fans, this move stinks of Ronald Koeman from the Netherlands to Barcelona, with Shevchenko possibly giving up a great position as Ukraine boss to ultimately fail as an interim at Chelsea.

5/1 Max Allegri

Taking English lessons even before his departure from Juventus in 2019 after collecting five league titles as well as making two Champions League finals, there’s little doubt that Allegri would jump at the chance of taking this job.

If he’s the right man is another question. Chelsea have had great success with Italians in the past, but Abramovich’s hiring of Maurizio Sarri in 2018 was down to wanting to win pretty, Allegri is all about winning, which may please many fans, but perhaps not the owner.

15/2 Julien Nagelsmann

Far and away the most exciting young coach in world football, Nagelsmann’s ability to improve every player in his squad whilst showing extraordinary tactical ability with constant shifts throughout games would certainly exploit a Chelsea side bustling with talent.
However, Nagelsmann is incredibly unlikely to be available until the end of the season, with the 33-year-old in the midst of a Bundesliga and Champions League race with Leipzig.

Chelsea could try and arrange a deal with the German for 2021/22 and bring in an interim in the meantime, but things will be complicated by strong reports Bayern Munich also want him for next season, with the treble winners his dream club.

Many mocked Leicester’s desperation to bring in Rodgers from Celtic but they’ve been proved comprehensively wrong by the best active manager in the game to hail from the British Isles.

While you would expect Rodgers to want to wait until the end of the season, he does have form leaving as early as he did with Celtic, although things would be complicated by a reported frosty relationship between the Northern Irishman and Chelsea’s ownership after he left the club as a youth team coach back in 2007.

12/1 Ralf Rangnick

Linked with every big Premier League club at one point in the past, Rangnick is considered in Germany as the godfather of the new high-intensity German football that has seen the likes of Jurgen Klopp rise to the top of the game, and his work with the Red Bull organisation is hugely respected by everyone important in football.

Approached by former side Schalke to return to management last year, Rangnick reportedly turned down the role due in part to the fact he left the club because of stress in the past, but also as he wants ultimate control in his next position. Both those factors would only be exacerbated at Chelsea, making this move very unlikely.

12/1 Ralph Hasenhüttl

Many were shocked when Hasenhüttl went from finishing as a runner-up in the Bundesliga to mid-table in the Premier League with Southampton, but after three years he’s shown exactly why he wanted to put himself on display in England.

One of the best tactical minds in the league, Hasenhüttl continually gets the best out of each player in his squad and looks destined to manage a top team very soon, whether that’s Chelsea, we could well find out soon.

The likes of Avram Grant (16/1), Rafael Benitez (20/1), Guus Hiddink (33/1), could well come in as interims if the club opts for someone like Nagelsmann or Rodgers for 2021/22, but would certainly only be in the job until the end of the season.
