Italian outfit AS Roma have secured the services of Jose Mourinho, with the former treble-winning Inter Milan manager finding a new home after being sacked by Tottenham Hotspur just two weeks ago.
Mourinho looked set for a spell away from the game following his Spurs firing, signing up for media deals with talkSPORT and other outlets to cover the summer’s Euros, but Roma have acted quickly, axing their fellow Portuguese incumbent Paulo Fonseca last night.
58-year-old Mourinho enjoyed arguably his most successful spell in Italy with Inter between 2008-10, picking up an unprecedented treble in his final year, winning Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League before he was lured to Real Madrid.
The Portuguese had some success in Spain, but ultimately picked up far fewer trophies than Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona, before he returned to England to lift a third Premier League crown with Chelsea.
Since then though, Mourinho’s career has largely been marked by in-fighting, a lack of trophies and antiquated tactics, meaning his Tottenham exit was expected, although the timing, a week before the League Cup final, was a surprise.
Mourinho joins a Roma side seventh in Serie A, and on course to depart the Europa League after an embarrassing 6-2 first leg semi final loss against Manchester United.
“After meetings with the ownership, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma,” said Mourinho after signing until 2024. “The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season. Daje Roma!”
