Les Dogues end Paris Saint-Germain's dominance

Lille do the unthinkable and snatch Ligue 1 title

Lille won the Ligue 1 title on Sunday after a 2-1 victory over Angers ensured they were crowned French champions for the first time since 2011.

An early Jonathan David strike and Burak Yilmaz's penalty in first-half stoppage time ensured that Christophe Galtier's side sensationally finished one point ahead of second-placed Paris Saint-Germain.

'Les Dogues' became French champions for just the fourth time in their history - Lille only the third team to win two or more Ligue 1 titles this century (Lyon and PSG the others).

Heading into this season, Galtier's side were unfancied, not least due to the fact their budget is less than a quarter of PSG's.

Galtier, the man behind the glory

Lille's Ligue 1 title success can be ranked as one of the biggest achievements in European football this decade and coach Galtier has to take huge credit.

The 54-year-old manager replaced current Leeds coach Marcelo Bielsa in the middle of the 2017/18 season after a poor run of three wins in 15 games.

After staving off relegation, Galtier has since established Lille as one of the best outfits in France and recorded a second-place finish in 2018/19 and fourth-place in 2019/20.

Under Galtier, Lille have developed an excellent reputation for developing young players with the likes of Arsenal's Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel Magalhães notably earning big money transfers to the Premier League.

However, in addition to giving youth its head, this Lille squad has extracted the best from experienced heads such as former Southampton defender José Fonte (37-years-old) and Burak Yilmaz (35), both of whom were crucial to their title success this season. Fonte has been a pillar of consistency, missing just two league games, while Turkey international Yilmaz has been Lille's most productive attacking threat with 16 goals and five assists this term.

Lille's Ligue 1 triumph is a fantastic story, and here's a fantastic stat to end this article: across Europe's 'Top 5' leagues in 2020/21, Lille conceded fewer goals (23) and kept more clean sheets (21) than any team.
