England have booked their place in the final of a major competition for the first time in 55 years, with Harry Kane’s extra-time penalty ending a tense affair against Denmark at Wembley tonight.
Gareth Southgate’s side started strongly once again, but after failing to create a clear-cut chance, they received a warning shot from long-range by Mikkel Damsgaard.
The Sampdoria midfielder got another chance to show his shooting quality soon after, pinging a beautifully taken free-kick past Jordan Pickford for a lead on the half-hour mark, with England missing an opportunity to equalise soon after when Raheem Sterling blasted a point-blank shot straight at Kasper Schmeichel.
It didn’t take long for the Three Lions to find their way in behind the Danish defence again though, with Kane finding Bukayo Saka with an inch-perfect through-ball, before Saka’s pass that was destined for a Sterling tap-in was turned in by Simon Kjaer.
Kasper Hjulmand’s substitutions of Damsgaard and Kasper Dolberg in the 67th minute seemed to surrender the game for Denmark, with Schmeichel soon being called into regular action.
It was all England to end the match, but no breakthrough was found until extra time when Sterling’s jink into the box was halted illegally, allowing Kane to take one of the worst penalties of his career, but he still managed to tuck in the rebound after Schmeichel’s initial save.
