Carabao Cup round-up

For the second time this season, Chelsea progress to the next round of the Carabao Cup after winning a penalty shootout (4-3) after a 1-1 draw against Southampton at Stamford Bridge.

In the first 90 minutes Kai Havertz had given the Blues the lead on the stroke of half-time with a powerful header, however, Scotland international Che Adams scored quickly after the match restarted, pouncing on the rebound after Kyler Walker-Peters had a shot blocked.

The hosts were stonger for the majority, but never controlled the game and in fact it was the visitors, who went the closest to score, when in stoppage time, Kepa produced two brilliant stops to deny Lyanco and Mohammed Salisu the goal.

Going into the penalty shootout, Thomas Tuchel's side who prevailed - much like they did in the last round against Aston Villa - thanks to Reece James' winning effort, as they through into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

At the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal will also be in the last eight of the Carabao Cup, after a 2-0 victory over Leeds United.

Substitute Calum Chambers, 23 seconds after coming on as a substitute took the lead for the Gunners with 55 minutes on the clock. The defender's header looked to have been saved by Illan Meslier but goal-line technology ruled that the ball had crossed the line.

Former Leeds loanee Eddie Nketiah gave Arsenal an ultimately comfortable win, seizing on a poor back header from Liam Cooper to touch beautifully over Meslier, before dribbling home from two yards

Elsewhere, League One side Sunderland won away at QPR on penalties (3-1) after they played out a goalless draw at Loftus Road.

The three teams will find out their quarter-final opponents on Saturday morning.
