Matt Gray’s Sutton United are giving their fans a nervous time this season. The Us have won 12 games by a single margin in all competitions – the most from any team across ‘The 92’.
Sutton are currently third in League Two in an automatic promotion space with a goal difference of just +8 despite also being the third-highest scorers in the league behind Forest Green Rovers and Newport County.
By comparison, Leyton Orient are 13th and have a goal difference of +16 and are the fifth-highest top scorers.
In all competitions this season, Sutton have won 1-0 an impressive seven times in total, won 2-1 on three occasions, and provided an entertaining 3-2 and 4-3 victory. That 3-2 win coming earlier this week when the Amber and Chocolates came from 2-1 down to win after a 92nd-minute winning goal from Will Randall.
When Sutton do lose, it's also frequently by just a single goal margin. Of their 10 defeats in all competitions, eight were by a single goal. So it’s no surprise that Sutton also have the fewest number of draws in League Two.
Getting the most out of those fine margins might just be what sends Sutton to League One next season.
