Internazionale lifted the Coppa Italia in a derby d’Italia final with a 4-2 victory in extra-time.
There were just seven minutes gone when Nicolò Barella opened the scoring at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome with a delightful curling effort from just outside the box that goalkeeper Mattia Perin didn’t even try to save – he wouldn’t have been able to anyway.
Inter went into the break with their 1-0 goal lead but just seven minutes into the second period they were suddenly losing after a quick one-two punch from the Old Lady. Alex Sandro sent in a low drive in the 50th minute that Álvaro Morata may or may not have gotten a touch to but either way it deceived Samir Handanovic to bring Juve level.
Massimiliano Allegri’s team were in the lead just two minutes later. Dusan Vlahovic, who had an excellent effort saved by Handanovic in the first half, found acres of space in behind the Nerazzurri defence. The Slovenian goalkeeper stood tall again to deny Vlahovic, but the former Fiorentina player followed through on the rebound to make it 2-1 to Juventus.
But Inter levelled things in the final just ten minutes from time when Leonardo Bonucci bundled Lautaro Martínez over in the box. VAR was needed to make the call when it could be argued that it was Martínez who created the foul himself. However, Hakan Çalhanoglu made no mistake from the penalty spot to send the game into extra time.
The Milan team got their noses in front nine minutes into the first period of extra-time and again from a penalty. Again, Juve can have no complaints about the decision though and Ivan Perisic let fly into the rough of the net – an unstoppable finish.
There was no stopping Perisic’s next effort either. The Croatian firing in a thunderous effort into the roof of the net to make it 4-2 and ensure that Inter won the Coppa Italia for the first time since 2011.
