Sam Kerr struck late as Chelsea came from behind against Liverpool to keep their title charge going in the WSL.
It was the visitors who struck with Emma Koivisto scoring in the first two minutes. The goal came from the left with a cross from Natasha Dowie who found Koivisto unmarked at the far post to convert from close range.
After that poor start Chelsea dominated for much of the rest of the game. The Reds were resilient for as long as possible but eventually conceded an equaliser just before half-time.
A corner from Ève Périsset was met at the near post by former Liverpool player Niamh Charles, whose header found a way past Faye Kirby.
The second half was similar with Emma Hayes’ side enjoying plenty of position and having numerous shots with Liverpool defending well.
Chelsea were slowly getting closer and did have the ball in the net in the 82nd minute through Guro Reiten only for a marginal offside to go against the Blues.
However, just a few minutes later Sam Kerr popped up as usual to bag the winner. A Chelsea cross from the left was cleared as far as Jessie Flemming. Flemming sent in a curling effort that bounced off the post into the path of Kerr to convert.
The result moves Chelsea closer to the top with the Blues currently on 43 points from 17 games – just four behind Manchester United who have still played two more. The team will need to recover quickly for the visit of another Merseyside team when Everton come to town on Sunday.
Liverpool meanwhile put in a brave effort but were always unlikely to recreate their shock win back on the opening weekend of the season. Things don’t get much easier for Matt Beard’s team though with their final three games of the campaign coming against Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Manchester United.
