Martinez names Ronaldo in Portugal squad

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named in Portugal's squad for their Euro 2024 qualification games against Liechtenstein and Luxembourg later this month.

There had been speculation swirling regarding the 38-year-old's international future following the 2022 World Cup in Qatar where he tearfully left the pitch following Portugal's defeat to Morocco in the quarter-finals. 

Roberto Martinez has since taken over the reins from Fernando Santos as the Selecao's manager and he has picked Ronaldo in his first squad.

Martinez stated that Ronaldo "is very important for the team" and that talent rather than age is his main selection criterion. 

Currently plying his trade in Saudi Arabia with Al Nassr, who he joined from Man Utd on a free in January, Ronaldo has a world record 118 goals in 196 appearances for his country. 

Portugal's qualifiers see them entertain Liechtenstein on 23 March before a trip to Luxembourg three days later.
