West Ham United have climbed out of the Premier League's bottom three after securing a 1-0 win over Southampton at the London Stadium.
Nayef Aguerd's excellent header midway the first half secured the victory for West Ham in a tense game between the two teams that started the day in the league's bottom two positions.
Southampton's Romain Perraud almost equalized immediately, but Lukasz Fabianski's athletic save pushed his shot wide.
Jarrod Bowen's curling effort in stoppage time hit the crossbar and sailed behind, leaving West Ham to hold on to their lead going into the second half.
In the second period, the Saints put on the pressure, with substitute Kamaldeen Sulemena missing a great chance in the 57th minute. During the team's best period, Romeo Lavia and Carlos Alcaraz were both denied by Fabianski in a two-minute spell.
Lucas Paqueta could have sealed the win for West Ham in the 82nd minute, but he missed the target from just a few yards out.
Ruben Selles' men had a great opportunity to level the score in the 86th minute through Paul Onuachu's header from James Ward-Prowse's delivery, but the January signing struck the crossbar.
The win takes West Ham up to 14th in the table while leaving Southampton at the bottom. The Saints are three points behind 17th-placed Leeds United, but have an inferior goal difference, having also played more games than any other team in the bottom seven.
