Sheffield United’s David McGoldrick scored an 85th minute header against Switzerland meaning Mick McCarthy’s side stay unbeaten in Euro 2020 qualifying.
Newcastle’s Fabian Schar had given the away side the lead before Northern Ireland piled on the pressure late on. Glenn Whelan smashed a shot off the bar before some great work from James McClean kept the ball in Switzerland’s half, where his deflected cross found McGoldrick’s head.
The win means The Republic of Ireland sit top of Group D, undefeated, and three points clear of Denmark who have a game in hand.
Northern Ireland picked up a friendly win over Luxembourg thanks to a 37th minute headed own goal from Kevin Malget.
Michael O’Neill’s side resume their European Championship qualification against Germany on Monday and remain in high spirits, having won their last five matches, also sitting top in Group C.
In qualification for Euro 2020 there was also a 1-2 win for Spain away in Romania courtesy of a Sergio Ramos penalty and Paco Alcácer strike. Florin Andone made things interesting and Diego Llorente saw red. Spain’s five wins from five keeps them top of Group F.
Italy went down early away in Armenia but two goals from Torino’s Andrea Belotti either side of a Lorenzo Pellegrini effort saw a 1-3, maintaining a perfect record top of Group J.
Sweden, Denmark and Bosnia-Herzegovina all picked up big wins with Christian Eriksen scoring two penalties in a 0-6 win away to Gibraltar, as rising star Alexander Isak notched a brace in Sweden’s 0-4 win against the Faroe Islands.
