Liverpool now have the most points of any team from a top five European league after 22 games as they made it only two points dropped since the start of the season with yet another victory, this time a nervy 1-0 away at Spurs.

Liverpool started rapidly with Spurs needing a goal line clearance and the post to keep out the Reds in the opening two minutes, but Tottenham gradually gained a foothold in a game where Liverpool never really hit top gear.

Jurgen Klopp’s side scored the only goal of the game on the 37th minute when Spurs failed to clear their lines, and after a quick turn, Roberto Firmino smashed in the eventual match winner.

In a second-half of wasted breakaways and poor finishing, Spurs missed the best chance late on when Giovanni Lo Celso somehow blasted Serge Aurier’s cross back where it came from in what looked like a certain goal.

Behind the leaders in second, Southampton avenged their record 9-0 home loss to Leicester earlier in the season by inflicting a 2-1 defeat at the King Power after the Foxes had taken a 14th minute lead through Dennis Praet.

Southampton struck back through Stuart Armstrong five minutes later, before yet another Danny Ings goal made it four wins and a draw in the Saints' last five.

Closing out the top four are Chelsea who notched a convincing 3-0 home win over Burnley after some shakey form, in a game that featured Callum Hudson-Odoi’s first Premier League goal.

And at Old Trafford, Manchester United moved back up to fifth, five points short of the Champions League places with a similarly convincing display in 4-0 home win over Norwich that saw a Marcus Rashford brace.

Elsewhere, Richarlison gave Carlo Ancelotti three league wins in four in a 1-0 win over Brighton, while Wolves and Newcastle played out a 1-1 draw at Molineux in which Miguel Almiron scored his third goal in six games.
