Sheffield Wednesday bolstered their position in the play-off spots while denting MK Dons' chances at Stadium MK this evening.
Barry Bannan was the star man, the experienced Scotsman running the show for the visitors. Bannan set up Saido Berahino from a clever short corner routine to give the Owls the lead after just ten minutes.
Another assist came just ten minutes later, this time from a more standard corner delivery that Lee Gregory got on the end of.
The away fans only had to wait another ten minutes for Bannan to produce one of the strikes of the season. Dean Lewington’s header about 10 yards outside of his own box bounced kindly to the 32-year-old midfielder, who controlled the ball on his chest before firing a looping shot from about 30-yards out that caught Dons goalkeeper Jamie Cumming in no man’s land.
Another ten minutes passed and MK Dons pulled one back. Scott Twine set Troy Parrott on a run and the Tottenham Hotspur loanee did well to keep his composure and finish past Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
The home side made it 3-2 in stoppage time to give Sheffield Wednesday a nervy end. This time it was a sensational free-kick from Twine that Peacock-Farrell had no chance of getting to.
With Rotherham United defeating Ipswich Town 1-0 in the early kick-off, the Dons are now back in third place, level on points with the Millers but with an inferior goal difference having played one game further.
Meanwhile, Wigan Athletic were surprised at home to Cambridge United to leave Rotherham and MK Dons four points behind the league leaders.
