League Two final day: Bristol Rovers in seventh heaven

A blockbuster final day of the League Two season saw Bristol Rovers pull off a sensational 7-0 victory over Stevenage to secure the final automatic promotion spot while Forest Green Rovers returned to the top of the table to be crowned champions.

We’ll start at the Mem, where there were extraordinary scenes. With Northampton Town and the Gas level on points going into this game, Rovers knew they needed to score a hatful to take third place.

Fortunately for Joey Barton’s side, they were facing a young Stevenage side who are already relegated and delivered a thrashing that meant that Northampton’s 3-1 win away to Barrow wasn’t enough.

Teenager Oliver Lobley’s own goal gave the Gas the lead and from there they just kept on scoring and scoring. The seventh goal came from 19-year old Elliot Anderson, which led to the game being stopped for several minutes following a pitch invasion.

In comparison, the twists and turns at the top of the table seemed tame. Exeter City were in pole positions before the games kicked off with Forest Green Rovers hoping to take advantage of any mistakes.

When James Wilson scored for Port Vale with 36 minutes gone into their match against the Grecians it didn’t make much of a difference with Mansfield Town already 1-0 up against Forest Green Rovers.

But Rob Edwards' team fought back late on and the game finished 2-2 thanks to an 81st-minute Josh Marsh goal to give Forest Green Rovers the League Two title.

The draw between Forest Green and Mansfield also meant that the Stags kept their place in the play-off places alongside Port Vale and Swindon Town.
