Wigan Athletic have been given an immediate three-point penalty by the EFL after failing to pay player salaries.
The deduction comes from Wigan having previously failed to pay salaries in June, July, and October of last year which led to a suspended sanction. With the failure to pay salaries for March 2023, that sanction has now come into effect.
On top of that, the club has been charged with further breaches. As revealed detailed in a statement, Wigan Athletic’s owner “has failed to deposit an amount equal to 125% of its forecast monthly wage bill in a designated Club account” – a measure that was supposed to prevent this situation from happening again. As a result, the club’s owner has been charged with misconduct.
The Latics are already struggling in the Championship with a return to now League One looking more and more likely next season.
Wigan were five points adrift from safety with 34 points before the penalty which now leaves them on 31 points with a gap of eight points.
