Manchester City were in complete control at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán with a 4-0 win over Sevilla.
Pep Guardiola made three changes from the weekend after City’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa. New signing Manuel Akanji was given his debut while Sergio Gómez made his first start for the Citizens and Jack Grealish was also brought into the team.
Sevilla have had a horror start to the season after losing their starting centre-backs so it was no surprise that it took just 20 minutes for City to take the lead.
Phil Foden fed Kevin De Bruyne down the right who put in a perfect cross that Erling Haaland was able to get to first and finish from close range. A familiar sight this season.
City were in complete control but had to wait until the 58th minute before they made it 2-0. This time João Cancelo found Foden in the area. The England international did well to make room in the Sevilla area and dig out a low finish.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bono was culpable for City’s third. It was the lively Foden again whose low shot was parried away by Bono into the path of Haaland and you can guess what happened next. The Moroccan international really should have done much better with Foden’s shot and certainly not have palmed into the worst place possible but the Norwegian striker has now scored his 12th goal of the season already.
It took 83 minutes for Sevilla to have their first attempt on target when Suso’s shot went straight at Ederson.
Rúben Dias put some extra sheen on the scoreline in stoppage time when he was able to tap the ball home after a low cross from João Cancelo fizzed across the Sevilla area.
It was a well-deserved win for City who were far better than they were last weekend. The English champions will now focus back on the league after a job well done and look forward to the visit of Tottenham Hotspur to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
