Arsenal and Chelsea are both within touching distance of securing a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a game to spare.
The London sides remain undefeated in this season’s tournament and share an identical record of three wins and a draw, earning ten points so far.
Arsenal host the European Champions Lyon at the Emirates Stadium this evening knowing that a point is enough to guarantee top spot in Group C.
However, should Lyon manage to win then Arsenal are still firmly in control of the group. The Gunners’ remarkable 5-1 victory over Lyon in France means that Les Fenottes would need to equal or better that scoreline to finish ahead of Arsenal. Considering how well Jonas Eidevall’s team have been performing this season, it seems pretty unlikely.
A positive result for Arsenal would then mean that next week's final group game away to FC Zürich would be a dead rubber. Should Lyon lose in London it could set up a winner-takes-all clash with Juventus that same day.
The Blues ran riot in the first encounter between the two sides, winning 8-0 with Sam Kerr bagging four and Pernille Harder sealing a hat-trick (Kateřina Svitková scored the other).
A win wouldn’t guarantee Chelsea's top spot just yet though. In the other game, Group A game Paris Saint-Germain host Real Madrid, if the French side don’t win then Chelsea top the group but if they do it leads to a top-of-the-table clash between the Blues and PSG on the final day. Chelsea won 1-0 in Paris, so they would go into the game with a slight advantage.
In the other two groups, Wolfsburg are the only team to have qualified and are likely to be joined by Roma. Meanwhile, Barcelona and Bayern Munich will probably progress from Group D unless Benfica are able to ruffle a few feathers.
Following the conclusion of the group stages, the quarter-final and semi-final draw will be made in Nyon on the 10th February with the final to be played in Eindhoven on June 3rd.
Before then Arsenal and Chelsea will face off as the WSL returns in 2023 in what could be a crucial game in the title race.
