Arsenal failed to set up an all-English Europa League showdown as the Gunners' goalless draw at the Emirates saw Villarreal secure a 2-1 aggregate win to book their place in the final against Manchester United.
After a 2-1 defeat in Spain last Thursday, the Gunners knew what they had to do, but they found the Yellow Submarine in buoyant mood.
Mikel Arteta's men pushed for a goal, but their luck was out at key moments in the game: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hitting the post for the Gunners in both halves.
Just two shots on target in the 90 minutes illustrated the Gunners general lack of attacking verve.
It was a night to remember for Villarreal fans, however, and their manager Unai Emery - who was sacked by Arsenal in 2019 after leading the Gunners to the Europa League final back in 2019, when they lost to Chelsea in Baku.
The final will take place in Gdansk, Poland on Wednesday May 26 (8pm kick off) in a game that is expected to allow up to 9,500 spectators - 25 per cent of the stadium's capacity - the Polish authorities have confirmed.
Cavani quells Roman uprising
Manchester United confirmed their place in the Europa League final despite losing 3-2 against AS Roma on Thursday night at the Stadio Olimpico, progressing courtesy of an 8-5 aggregate win.
The Red Devils arrived in Rome with a 6-2 win under their belts from the first leg in Manchester and the in-form Edinson Cavani gave the visitors a first-half lead. However, goals from Edin Dzeko and Bryan Cristante put Roma in front in the tie.
Cavani, however, killed any hopes of a surge from the hosts when he levelled the contest from a superb Bruno Fernandes' cross. The Italians, to be coached by José Mourinho next season, bagged a consolation victory when Nicola Zalewski's shot from a tight angle found its way into the back of the net.
With the final to be played in less than three weeks, United's focus will return to the Premier League as they'll have a tough week ahead with three games scheduled in the next five days. On Sunday, they travel to Villa Park before they play home games against Champions League spots chasers Leicester (on Tuesday) and Liverpool (on Thursday).
