FIFA have confirmed that, for the first time ever, there will be an all-female officiating team in a FIFA World Cup match when Costa Rica face Germany on Thursday.
French referee Stephanie Frappart will be the referee and she will be joined by assistants Neuza Back and Karen Diaz.
Frappart has already been a leading figure in female refereeing and has already set records in her career. In 2019, she became the first female to referee a Ligue 1 game and a UEFA Europa League game. Then, in 2020, she became the first female to referee a UEFA Champions League match.
She has been on the men’s FIFA refereeing roster since 2021 when she officiated a FIFA World Cup qualifying match between the Netherlands and Latvia.
Thursday’s match between Costa Rica and Germany is crucial in determining who qualifies from Group E with both teams able to qualify with a victory.
