Goal of The (Pre)Season?

Last night's pre-season match-up between Premier League newboys Brentford and Manchester United certainly whet the appetite for the coming season - and Andreas Pereira's thunderbolt volley has thrown down an early marker for 'Goal of the Season'.

Brentford's clash against Arsenal on Friday 13 August will kick off proceedings in the English top flight for 2021/22, and the Bees look to be shaping up nicely on the evidence of their 2-2 draw with the Red Devils at Old Trafford last night. 

The four goals served up were all of exceptionally high quality, Swedish youngster Anthony Elanga swivelling on a sixpence to put United a goal to the good after 12 minutes. Brentford levelled with an equally good left-footed effort from the edge of the box by Shandon Baptiste before Pereira's moment of inspiration just after the break. 

After a snapshot from Jesse Lingard was saved and cleared to the edge of the area, there appeared little danger, but Brazilian playmaker Pereira - who spent last season on loan at Lazio - fastened onto the looping clearance and smashed an unstoppable volley into the top corner past helpless Brentford keeper David Raya. 

It was an outstanding effort, but there was a sting in the tail for United, as Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo burst clear on the right and notched with a clinical finish past the Red Devils' summer signing Tom Heaton on 78 minutes.
