Dramatic penalty shootout sends Crewe to Wembley

Crewe secured their place in the League Two play-off final with a thrilling victory over Doncaster Rovers on penalties, following an incredible second-leg comeback at The Eco-Power Stadium.

With a 2-0 lead from the first leg and in better form, Doncaster appeared poised for a Wembley-bound journey. However, Crewe swiftly erased their two-goal deficit within just 15 minutes of play.

Crewe's skipper Mickey Demetriou rose above the crowded penalty area to nod in a header past Thimothee Lo-Tutala within the opening six minutes.

Just ten minutes later, the Railwaymen levelled the tie as James Maxwell inadvertently put the ball into his own net.

Although Rovers improved as the match progressed, neither team could find a breakthrough in the 90 minutes.

In extra time, Luke Molyneux's powerful strike was denied by the post, but fatigue seemed to set in for both sides, resulting in few clear-cut chances.

The hosts initially appeared to have the upper hand in the penalty shootout when Lo-Tutala saved Demetriou's second spot-kick.

However, Max Stryjek's save from Zain Westbrooke's effort shifted the momentum. With all other penalties converted, Hakeeb Adelakun's effort was thwarted by the keeper, sealing Crewe's victory in the shootout.

Crewe will now face the winner of the MK Dons and Crawley match, where the Reds hold a commanding 3-0 lead from the initial leg. The play-off final will take place at Wembley on Sunday, May 19th.

And so, it all came down to penalties. After both teams converted their first four spot-kicks, it was Crewe who held their nerve and advanced to the play-off final with a 5-4 victory on penalties.

As a Crewe fan, I am over the moon with this result! What a comeback from the boys in blue! We never gave up and showed true determination. Disappointed for Doncaster, but we deserved this win. Onwards to Wembley!

However, the drama was far from over, as Crewe emerged victorious in the penalty shootout, with Demetriou once again the hero, scoring the winning spot-kick to secure their place in the final.

As a football fan of Doncaster Rovers, I have to admit it was a tough loss to Crewe. We were so close to Wembley, but they put up an incredible fight and came out on top. Congrats to them and we'll come back stronger next season
